Internet Safety for Parents & Kids

Talk with your parents about setting rules for Internet use.  These can include where you go online and how long you stay online.  Then Stick with the rules!
Don't tell anyone your password, or write it down anywhere, make sure it can't be guessed.
Never enter your password when someone is standing near you.  If you think your password has been stolen, change it immediately.
There are good places and bad places on the internet.  If you end up some place on the computer that makes you uncomfortable, leave the computer and tell an adult.
Never, ever give out personal information such as your name, home address, phone number, password, school name, school mascot or team names when you are online.
Be very careful of indirectly saying too much.  Eventually, you can say enough.
If your screen name contains part of your age, birthday or address, you should choose a different screen name if you are in a public place online.
Chatrooms and Newsgroups should only be entered if approved by an adult.
Be suspicious of anyone who tries to turn you against your parents, teachers or friends.
Don't answer an instant message from someone you don't know, and never reply to one that makes you feel threatened, confused or uncomfortable.
Never arrange a face to face meeting with someone you meet online.
Don't accept or open anything that a stranger send you over the Internet, including email files, or a link to a website.
If you receive a message from an unknown person, delete it without opening it.
Most important:  not everything you read on the internet is true.

A General Guideline for reporting internet wrongdoing:
Call the local police and ask if they have a department affiliated with Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC).  If they do, go through that department.
Simultaneously file a report with the Cybertis hotline:  1-800-843-5678.  Reports can be made directly online by clicking the cybertip hotline at http://www.missingkids.com/.
The police High Tech Unit for Cobb County can be reached at 770-499-4512.

CyberBullying:
Save everything you can.  Ask the person to stop.  Start over by changing all accounts (if no other choice).  Ask the site that is hosting (Xanga, MySpace, FaceBook) to remove the inappropriate web page.
